Indianapolis-podiatrist-applying-Remy-laser-to-patients-foot

You've dealt with the foot pain long enough. Maybe it's a nagging heel that makes mornings miserable, or toenails that have thickened and discolored despite every cream and soak you've tried. Since traditional treatments haven't delivered, now you have an appointment scheduled for Remy laser therapy. This is a meaningful step. At Indy Podiatry, our skilled Indianapolis podiatrists often see patients arrive for their first session unsure of what to expect—but then they leave with a clear plan and, often, a sense of real relief.

Knowing what's ahead makes the difference between walking in feeling anxious and walking in ready. Here's what every first-time patient should know before their appointment.

What Is Remy Laser Therapy, and How Does It Work?

Remy laser treatment uses Class IV laser technology to deliver infrared light deep into tissue—from the skin surface to the bone. The process is called photobiomodulation. When light energy reaches your cells, they absorb it and produce more adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the fuel that powers cellular function. That increase in ATP triggers faster tissue repair, reduced inflammation, and nerve regeneration.

Our doctors often recommend Remy laser treatment for patients dealing with foot and ankle pain such as:

The laser works by activating the body's lymphatic drainage system, stimulating beta-endorphin release, and promoting the growth of new capillaries to improve blood flow.

For toenail fungus, the process works differently. Light penetrates the nail itself, targeting the fungal colony without harming surrounding healthy tissue. This makes it a more direct approach than topical antifungals, which often can't reach the infection through the nail plate.

How Should You Prepare for Your Remy Laser Therapy Appointment?

The process is rather straightforward, which is one reason our patients appreciate this treatment. There are no injections, no anesthesia, and no recovery period afterward. That said, here are a few steps to help your session go smoothly.

  • Clean the treatment area. Arrive with clean feet, free of lotion, polish, or cream on or near the treatment area. These products can interfere with the laser light's penetration into tissue.
  • Wear comfortable, easy-to-remove footwear. Your podiatrist needs clear access to the treatment area. Sandals or slip-ons make this easier.
  • Bring a list of your medications. While Remy laser therapy is safe for most patients and appropriate for use over metal implants, your provider will review your health history once again before starting treatment.
  • Set aside about 30–45 minutes. The laser application itself typically takes around 10 minutes per area, but your first visit will include a thorough evaluation of your condition and a review of your treatment plan.
  • Expect to leave and resume normal activity. There’s no downtime. Our Central Indiana patients walk out and return to their regular routines the same day.

What Happens During the Laser Treatment Session?

When you arrive at Indy Podiatry, your doctor examines the affected area, reviews your symptoms, and confirms that Remy laser therapy fits your needs. Once treatment begins, you'll put on protective eyewear—a standard precaution with any laser therapy. Your podiatrist then directs the laser handpiece over the treatment area in slow, deliberate passes.

Most of our patients describe the sensation as a gentle warmth. There’s no pain, no vibration, and no noise beyond the soft hum of the device. Sessions are brief: for straightforward cases, 10 minutes is typical.

When Will You See Results From Remy Laser Therapy?

This question comes up in nearly every first appointment. The honest answer: it depends on what's being treated and your continuum of care plan. For example:

  • Many people who receive laser treatment for foot pain conditions such as plantar fasciitis or arthritis notice reduced discomfort within the first 3-6 sessions.
  • Neuropathy patients often report decreased tingling and burning before numbness fully resolves, with meaningful improvement typically appearing over eight to 12 weeks.

Toenail fungus requires the most patience. The laser can eliminate the fungal colony within the nail, but visible results depend on new nail growth—and toenails grow only about one to two millimeters per month! Most patients see healthy nails emerging within 9-12 months of starting treatment. Sticking with the full treatment plan matters here.

Our usual recommendation is at least six sessions for lasting results, though the total number varies by condition and severity.

What Comes Next?

Your first Remy laser therapy session is the beginning of a process, not a one-time fix. This treatment works cumulatively: each session builds on the last, triggering deeper cellular repair and more sustained relief over time. Patients who stay consistent with their recommended schedule and communicate openly with their care team about any changes in symptoms tend to see the strongest, most lasting results.

That consistency is easier when you trust the people guiding your treatment. At Indy Podiatry, our compassionate, experienced podiatrists take time to explain what's happening at each stage, adjust your plan as your body responds, and make sure you understand why each session matters. This isn't a passive process—it's a partnership. And for patients who have spent months or years managing pain that never fully resolves, this kind of attentive, individualized care makes all the difference.
